Its close proximity to Atlanta and lifestyle account for Rockdale’s steady growth. It is the smallest county in both land and population in metro Atlanta and the second smallest in the state of Georgia.
Employment has also grown. Established businesses are relocating to Rockdale and the area retains a solid core of manufacturing jobs. John Deere and an AT&T facility have chosen this quiet community.
The population of Rockdale County is just over 70,000, with business activity keeping pace. Even so, Rockdale plans on remaining primarily a suburban, residential community with commercial activity centered in Conyers, the only incorporated city in the county.
With one of the top school systems in the state and the nation, education is another drawing point to this close-knit community. Rockdale’s students consistently outscore their peers in the state and metro area on skills tests.
With its community spirit, Conyers and Rockdale County earned the opportunity to host the 1996 Olympic Equestrian, Mountain Biking and Two Modern Pentathlon events. A local site encompassing more than 1,200 acres was selected for the Georgia International Horse Park, which served as the equestrian venue and is now a permanent regional recreational complex. The Arnold Palmer-designed golf course Cherokee Run was completed at the same time.
The housing market is mixed, offering a wide range of prices.

Panola Mt. State Conservation Park
Located on a granite mountain in south Rockdale, the Smyrna Campground, where old fashion camp meetings have been held since before the Civil War, and Black Shoals Reservoir, a County-owned 650-acre water supply and recreation lake in the northern part of the County. It also is home to the city of Conyers Georgia International Horse Park, site of the 1996 Olympic Equestrian events.
