Up to 65 percent of its residents work in the county. Well-planned roads, utilities and transportation facilities, a skillfully trained labor force and one of the lowest tax rates in the region have positioned Gwinnett for just about any type of economic development. The county is home to more than 400 international companies and 650 high-tech firms. Gwinnett adds an average of 350 new office and industrial companies annually, adding approximately 1,200 new jobs a year.
Much of the high-tech flavor and new business development in Gwinnett is due to the presence of Technology Park/Atlanta, a 600-acre industrial campus with more than 70 firms set amidst rolling hills and pine groves; the industrial park is part of a planned community—Peachtree Corners—which offers stately homes.
The housing market is one of the main reasons Gwinnett continues to grow with such impressive progress. The median age of Gwinnett’s population is 32.5. Young professionals and singles are attracted to the countless apartment communities, particularly in the Peachtree Corners area. For homebuyers there is a wide range of housing styles and prices in Doraville, Lilburn, Lawrenceville and Snellville. Further north is the affluent community of Duluth, and in the northern reaches of the county, close to Lake Lanier, is Buford.
Gwinnett has one of the finest and fastest-growing school systems in the nation. Gwinnett has 13 National Schools of Excellence (Blue Ribbon Schools) and 35 Georgia Schools of Excellence. More than 95 percent of the county’s public school students receive a high school diploma, and more than 86 percent go on to some form of postsecondary education.
The Gwinnett Civic and Cultural Center and the adjacent Gwinnett Fine Arts Center support an active arts community. The Mall of Georgia—with restaurants and retail shopping—affords residents and visitors all the choices associated with this booming metropolitan county.
