It has always been an interesting place. During Prohibition, Dawson County’s main claim to fame was its moonshine, which local bootleggers would speed down to Atlanta through an intricate network of back roads and fast cars. Now, however, Dawson County is known for its scenic beauty, local stock car racing heroes and the largest collection of kangaroos outside of Australia. Combine all of those things with Dawson’s famous outlet stores, and you have probably something for everyone.
About an hour north of Atlanta along Highway 400, Dawson County boasts some of the most beautiful outdoor recreation areas in that state. From the beginning of the Appalachian Trail to Georgia’s 729-foot Amicalola Falls, this area is known for the those attractions and Lake Sidney Lanier and the Kangaroo Conservation Center. For those uninterested in hiking or camping, the county also is home to Thunder Road USA, which house the Official Motorsports Hall of Fame for Georgia.
With a population of just over half a million, Dawson County is ranked as one of the top 15 fastest growing counties in the United States. Over 20 percent of its population is school-age children (and counting) and the county sees increasing numbers of new residents in retirement and new home communities. With all of this new growth, it is no wonder Dawson County is considered a booming place to be.
