With an environment that contributes to new and existing growth, Cobb is one of the fastest-growing counties in the nation.
The county is a major employment center with a strong, diversified economy. The largest number of jobs is in the service sector, followed by retail trade; Lockheed Martin Aeronautical Systems Company is the county’s largest private employer. An increasing percentage of Cobb’s service and retail jobs are tourism-related. Three of the Southeast’s largest theme amusement parks are located in Cobb: Six Flags, White Water and American Adventures.
Growing numbers of the nation’s largest companies have operations in the prestigious “Platinum Triangle,” 20 million square feet of urban office space in the Galleria area at the intersection of I-75 and I-285. An extension of high-quality commercial and retail offices is situated in Vinings Overlook and Cumberland Parkway. The Cobb Galleria Centre is a $40 million convention and exhibit facility. In south Cobb there exists another corridor of growth with high-volume warehousing, distribution and manufacturing.
A sales tax funded transportation program has yielded more than $1.5 billion dollars in improvements. Cobb Community Transit, a public bus system, began offering service in 1989, and opened its new and improved main operations, maintenance, and administration facilities off the South Marietta Parkway in May 2001.
Two public school systems serve Cobb County, one for the county proper and one for the city of Marietta. Both rank near the top in the state, and schools in both systems score at or above the national level on standard tests. There are also strong private schools, two technical institutions, two public senior colleges and three private colleges.
The county has a variety of housing. East Cobb is known for its affluent subdivisions, with the west side being popular among first-time buyers because it offers “a lot of house for the money.” Acworth, Powder Springs and Austell are still small towns with the advantage of urban environs. Smyrna is the second largest city in Cobb County with over 40,999 people, beautiful neighborhoods and more.
