Bartow County’s resources have always made the area an attractive place for human beings.
The earliest evidence of human settlement in Bartow County dates back more than 8,000 years during the Paleoindian Period, when the county’s geological attributes, natural resources and favorable climate combined to make Bartow one of the most heavily-populated areas of the state. The resulting archaeological heritage of the Etowah River Valley Region, a 40,000-acre tract spanning the southern third of the county, justified the entire tract being placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.
Now, Bartow is still as attractive, except for different reasons.
A proximity to Atlanta and area thoroughfares, local industry and reasonable housing costs make Bartow a popular favorite for homeowners looking to locate themselves near the city. Schools with low student to teacher ratios, towns with well-maintained historical neighborhoods and the progressive city of Cartersville also make Bartow unique.
Bartow’s historical production has decidedly not always been so high-tech—for most of its recent history, the county depended primarily on cotton, corn and wheat farming, mining and, by the turn-of the-century, carpet manufacturing. Now, however, the community is helped out by today’s industry, which include Glad trash bags, Lever Brothers soaps, Anheuser-Busch beers, and Goodyear Tires.
